Nik Kozub

Nik Kozub graduated from Edmonton’s Grant MacEwan College music program in 1998 with a major in recording arts, and was recognized for his work there with an award from CARAS (Canadian Academy Of Recording Arts and Sciences). Grant MacEwan hired Nik back as an instructor for their continuing education ‘Studio Recording Techniques’ program, which he has been teaching from 2001-present. In 2006, Nik was awarded the Enbridge Award for Emerging Artist by the Mayor’s Evening for the Arts in Edmonton.
Nik has worn many hats within the music industry over the years: he has been gigging in various bands since 1989, he has done close to a thousand shows across 3 continents not only as a musician, but also as a sound technician and a tour manager, he has produced and recorded well over 100 records (many of which were Edmonton locals) over the past 12 years, both working freelance in other studios, as well as at Zonik studios (originally founded by Nik’s father, Wilf) at his own home studio, and most recently, as an engineer at The Audio Department studio in Edmonton. Nik is also heavily involved in electronic music, as a DJ (Nik’s Nrmls Wlcm weekly club night held a residency at Edmonton’s Starlite Room for close to 5 years), a promoter (bringing artists like Chromeo and Matthew Dear to Edmonton for the first time), and with his Juno nominated band Shout Out Out Out Out (with whom he has also toured excessively across North America and Europe, playing at major festivals such as SXSW, CMJ, MoogFest, Virgin Festival, etc), as well as doing an increasing amount of remixes for international clients under The Paronomasiac moniker. Nik co-runs (with his band-mate Jason Troock) Normals Welcome Records, an internationally distributed record label working primarily with electronic music artists, including his own Shout Out Out Out Out releases. Nik’s music has received critical acclaim across the board from a wide variety of national and international press and influential music websites.
Nik’s recording work has been featured in EQ and Keyboard Magazine. As a member of Shout Out Out Out Out, Nik has graced the covers of CMJ, Vue Weekly, SEE Magazine, Eye Weekly, Ottawa Xpress, BeatRoute, and the Globe and Mail Arts Section, and has been featured in highly regarded US glossy magazines SPIN, Billboard, URB, BPM, and XLR8R, as well as British magazine Q, who named Shout Out Out Out Out as one of “the 10 best new bands on Earth”. In 2007 the band’s work was recognized with a nomination for a Juno Award in the Best Alternative Album category, an Indie Award, and a CBC 3 Bucky Award.
